Close your eyes. Take a minute to picture a Government School in India. What do you see? Are you reminded of cracked walls, broken chairs and unhygienic toilets? Sadly, this is the real image of most of the  the Government Schools in India.

The School Transformation Project by Janmanch Yuva is a unique one of a kind project that was started with the aim of making the most of the physical space of the school to create visual imageries through amalgamation of art and education. (as inspired by Zero Gravity)

The project is inspired by Building as Learning Aid also known as BaLA, a concept of UNICEF. BaLA is an innovation that can help India's schools become more child friendly. UNICEF has been a proud partner in supporting this initiative over the last decade to see how school space, both indoor and outdoor, can be developed as a learning resource for the children. With the Right to Education Act coming into force in India, the Act puts the power and responsibility in the hands of local government and School Management Committees to ensure that a child friendly environment that is welcoming and healthy is created.

The first Project was launched in the city of Pune also fondly known as Poona, under the supervision of Akanksha Mishra, a Symbiosis graduate and head of the School Transformation Project. The target school was Late Sitaram Abaji School, Bibwewadi, Pune where a team of 25 volunteers worked in shifts every day to transform the dull walls and classrooms of the schools into creative spaces for the children. Shubham More, the art teacher from Fergusson College along with the artists from Symbiosis Law School brainstormed and developed unique designs for the walls, doors and floors.

These artists and members included, Shubham More, Divya Shetty, Vibhuti Jangir, Ramya Reddy, Surbhi Agarwal, Vibha Bhat, Preetham Correa, Malvika Rangta, Shireen Kapur, Jaisy Rachel, Aditi Mishra, Harshrajkumari Singh, Nanditha Pillai, Naintara Bipin, Pranali Kamble, Anjali Sahajwani, Neena Aunty, Amrita Pratap, Tisha, Krutika and Hari.

Even the MLA of the Parvati constituency, Mrs. Madhuri Misal inaugrated  the school with full support.

We worked with the 3rd and 4th standard students to transform their classroom, corridor and the reading room.

Here are a few images from The School Transformation Project Pune,

This is how the classroom looked.

And this is how it looked after the transformation.

We also focused on different concepts that the kids could relate to, like, the Human Evolution
